NACIONAL'S ELECTIONS FOR THE BEST MANAGER 2003

Ivica Todorić is the best Croatian manager

The fifteen member jury made up of leading Croatian economic reporters and editors selected the manager of the year for the third year in a row: for the first time ever, the decision on the leading man in the Croatian economy was unanimous

Ivica Todorić, the owner and Executive president at Agrokor, is the manager of the year. The second ranked manager is the less well known Ernest Tolj, the Executive president of Eurocable. The third place is shared by Željko Perić, Executive president of Lura and Ivan Ergović, the leading man at Našicecement. Those are the results of the manager of the year elections conducted by Nacional for the third year in a row.

This year, Nacional confided in a jury made up of fifteen leading economic reporters and editors. The jury members, independently of one another, had the task of selecting five of their favorites from a list of approximately sixty candidates created by Nacional. Along with their choice of the five best managers in Croatia, they also had to add short comments on their business strategy, acquisitions, personnel, and profit… This year we once again kept our promise of uncovering how the individual judges measured the managers, and we cited the concrete number of votes that the reporters gave to individual candidates.

Based on their selection, Nacional created a list of top managers for 2003 in Croatia; each reporter gave five points to the first ranked manager, four to the second, three to the third ranked manager, two points to the fourth best, and one point to the fifth manager. The right to select his own candidate in case that manager is not on the list was used only by Đuro Tomljenović. He selected two such- Vlado Jerbić, the director of Belišće and the leader of 17,000 employees who became the largest manufacturer of paper products in Eastern Europe; and Dubravka Grgić, the president of the Agram concern, made up of twelve companies, of which the two most famous are Euroherc and Jadranska insurance houses, because they recorded a larger growth in the national market. Some candidates did not even make it into the competition, such as Danijela Žderić from Profil, Ljerka Cerc from Inker and Nina Oberiter Gluhak from PBZ American Express, even though certain reporters named them as individuals who shook the markets in their business zone.

This year’s competition- in which manufacturers took lead- was different from last year’s because reporters managed to reach a consensus on the best managers in Croatia- there did not exist a reporter that did not comment on the work and success of the top three managers, and clearly marked the winner. This is the reason that the elections are significantly different from last year, when the votes covered a wide circle of leaders from different activities. That is how Ivica Todorić easily won 35 votes and moved into first placed from the third place rank that he held previously in 2001 and 2002. Reporters specialized in economics nearly unanimously decided to put him in first place, moving the less well known Ernest Tolj to second place with a total of 27 votes, while 26 points went to Ivan Ergović, the key man at Našicecement, who was congratulated last year for constructing his large construction company as if it was made of Lego. The fifth place was given to Emil Tedeschi with 15 points, an entrepreneur of the younger generation, who was previously in ninth place. Fourteen points and sixth place went to Marijan Ćurković for merit in widening his list of services and freeing Croatia Insurance from the bad image it had during the period of HDZ. The seventh place was given to Željko Kerum, and the eight best manager is Ante Vlahović. However, once again, not one woman managed to reach the top of the list.

In 2001, bankers took the lead; that is when Franjo Luković won the title of best manager, and second place went to another banker, Zdenko Adrović from Raiffeisen Bank, third place went to Todorić, and fourth place went to Branko Gretić, the then manager at Tisak. Last year, however, the elections were as followed: Darko Marinac, the Executive president at Podravka was named the best manager; second place was shared by Josef Vinatzer, the Executive president at VIPnet and Željko Čović, the leader at Pliva. Nacional’s list of top managers does not only deal with individual success, characteristics, and faults, it also deals with social surroundings.

IVICA TODORIĆ, Agrokor

“It is astonishing but true: from a flower salesman, Todorić has become the largest private businessman in Croatia with an expected total income this year of approximately nine billion kuna. Without large affairs, even though he is deeply in debt, the owner of the largest private concern is surely moving forward.” (Marina Ralašić, Banka)

“The method of managing his company is slightly old-fashioned, but according to the results it is still the most successful way. He was among the first to realize the dangers of a global economy and despite mutual competition, he decided to invest in cooperation between companies. The best example of this was expansion was the creation of a consortium of Dinova for purchasing Diona which was in receivership. Apart from that, he is still the businessman who invests most in the regional market. Here we especially need to point out the purchase of the Serbian Frikom, which made him the first Croatian investor in Serbian nutritional production.” (Mislav Šimatović, Nacional)

“By purchasing the Serbian company Frikom, Todorić has enlarged his image of being a Croatian tycoon who uses satisfactory circumstances to become the owner of various companies. His direction in the nutritional industry has been proven as a good choice, and the breakthrough in the region increases Todorić’s chance at developing into one of the most significant nutritional companies in the region. The image of a social employer has helped him in entering the sensitive market of Croatian entrepreneurs.” (Ljubica Gatarić, Večernji list)

“As the first entrepreneur among managers or the first manager among entrepreneurs, Todorić is continuing to build his business empire. One on hand it is through acquisitions in Croatia and the region, and on the other hand it is through further development of the strong brands that Agrokor owns. The most significant success was had by Konzum which is strengthening its competition against foreigners and has maintained its key position in its market niche.” (Davor Huić, Briefing)

“After all doubts, Todorić has proven that his company is built on a stabile foundation. The total income reached eight billion kuna (second to Ina), and the capital widening of Agrokor is intensive in local and regional markets. He was the first to enter the Serbian market with large investments. Todorić has the reputation of being a desirable employer outside of Croatia as well, and it is expected that he will successfully realize his other planned acquisitions.” (Snježana Mlinarević, Večernji list)

“After he masterfully connected his businesses, technologically advanced his companies, and positioned his concern on the Croatian market, he used the acquisition of Frikom to move into regional expansion. Until then, the systematic investment in human resources and quick adoption of modern manager techniques was the basic guarantee that Agrokor will be successful in this expansion.” (Miomir Štrbac, Slobodna Dalmacija)

“He had enough courage to listen to instructions by the EBRD and not sell Konzum. He rejected their ultimatum and did the opposite- he invested all of his energy in expanding Konzum. His philosophy was very simple- if they do not have their own selling position, foreign chains will marginalize his products. That would make investing in production useless. His ambition to be the largest entrepreneur not only in Croatia but in the entire region is very positive.” (Berislav Jelinić, Nacional)

ERNEST TOLJ, Eurocable

“Tolj’s Eurocable became a very active player in the Croatian market; he opened a new factory (Jankomir), appeared as a potential buyer of other companies (Elka), and announced the first Croatian investment in Russia (Kaliningrad) which is valued at ten million euros. Eurocable also paced itself as one of the successful Croatian exporters.” (Darko Markušić, Vjesnik)

“Something as simple and functional as cable. He is enriching something simple. Those are the words of the owner of many still unknown companies who turned his philosophy into an advantage and became a strong cable manufacturer on the central and southeastern European markets. He invested in Zagreb in modern technology, and their products are taking a leading place in Europe related to productivity. Even though cable production began in 2001, he already has 60 employees and is planning to have twice the amount next year; he will begin manufacturing in Russia.” (Darko Buković, HINA)

“Opening factory after factory, he wants to purchase Elka, he is a fighter, open and capable, and regionally oriented…” (Marina Ralašić, Banka)

“If you have an idea, believe in yourself! That is the life motto of Ernest Tolj which was implemented in the Eurocable Group. He recently opened a new factory, and the best of his business successes is witnessed in the family environment at his companies, where the most modern technology is used and 70% of his production is meant for export in order to meet the demands of the eastern European market creating, on average, half a million euro profit per employee each year. Tolj comes from a family who sold cables, and he created a factory that is one of the most significant manufacturers of electrical cables in the region.” (Ljubica Vuko, Slobodna Dalmacija)

ŽELJKO PERIĆ, Lura
“It is clear that the advantage is fresh blood, especially if it runs in the veins of a man who acts and thinks as a manager from the western world, who can lead one company on the brink of stagnation into a new development cycle. Through acquisitions in Croatia and steps forward on the markets in Serbia and Montenegro with the purchase of Somboled, Lura with Perić on top has definitely taken a step forward in the regional business league.” (Miomir Štrbac, Slobodna Dalmacija)

“One more success story from Pliva. The congratulations go to Luka Rajić who clearly knows what he does not know (how to manage a large corporation), but knows how to find someone who does.” (Viktor Vresnik, Vjesnik)

“Even last year, Željko Perić emerged as the “most perspective” young manager in Croatia, and this year he has confirmed his status and the expectations that were placed on him after the high-profile transfer from Pliva. The nomination for manager of the year was deserved mainly because of the incredible increase in the rate of business activity in Lura in almost all issues- from reconstruction, cutting costs, acquisitions in Croatia and the region, to marketing and personnel management. He achieved all this through using the style of management and communication that opposes authority- using kindness, openness, and humanity.” (Davor Huić, Briefing)

“When the owner of one of the largest Croatian companies says that management sends the signals that will surely lead the company in the region, which is a confirmation that he estimated well in the development of Lura, then Željko Perić deserves his place among the most successful Croatian managers. Experience and good results that were recorded when he was an Executive member at Pliva for finance is used by Perić in the new business challenges in Lura. This year’s acquisition of Somboled, it seems, is the introduction into a more significant chapter in his business success.” (Ljubica Vuko, Slobodna Dalmacija)

“Over the past year and a half that he has spent at the top of Lura, Perić has proven himself as a very capable for living in the shadows of Luka Rajić. He responded to the crisis in Lura’s Executive board in the first half of the year by presenting sixty new products to the market as well as courageous investments in marketing, which in the end resulted in a 15% increase of the company’s profit.” (Mislav Šimatović, Nacional)

“After Perić’s arrival in Lura the company began to consolidate, and it is perceivable that there now exists a created strategy for further growth and development, which is seen in the successful takeover of Serbia’s Somboled.” (Darko Markušić, Vjesnik)

IVAN ERGOVIĆ, Našicecement, as of 1 July, NEXE GROUP
“Sure growth of a sought after product: cement. He connected with the EBRD at the right time, is regionally oriented, and has stabilized and consolidated the company over the past several years…” (Marina Ralašić, Banka)

“Due to smart and skilled moves, Ivan Ergović maintained his company as one of the national cement manufacturers in Croatian ownership, and at the same time he has used both national and regional needs in the development of infrastructure; under his leadership, various companies were taken over (tile factories) in Croatia, as well as in Serbia and BiH. Ergović has turned Našicecement into a modern company with 3000 employees and an annual profit of more than one billion kuna.” (Đuro Tomljenović, HTV)

“Even though he lives with the ‘curse’ that he does not operate in or from Zagreb, meaning that he is not well known, everything that he has done proves that he is a successful manager. Not one Croatian company has taken over so many companies in BiH and Serbia and Montenegro, companies that are unavoidable in any sort of infrastructure and other business investments.” (Darko Buković, HINA)

“From a slightly defined industrial company, he has created a real business system. He has restructured and financially stabilized the company, after which he diversified the operations through a series of acquisitions in Croatia and laid a foundation for long-term stabile growth. This is a company with a so-called ‘small base’, which proves that one can have top operations from a provincial region.” (Davor Huić, Briefing)

EMIL TEDESCHI, Atlantic Group
“He might be the best, but in the recent months he is mentioned too often, as if he is trying to be recognized as the best. That’s how it is with PR: it is not good when it is not present, and it becomes a foundation of doubt when used too often. He might require a short course from Luka Rajić.” (Viktor Vresnik, Vjesnik)

“He has successfully managed the transformation of the group from a trade company into an industrial one, created good results and proved that Cedevita’s brand can make anything. The victory of the consortium, in which Atlantic is a member, in the competition for the third television program shows their different interests, as well as the financial strength and lobby influence of the owner. Tedeschi is a young entrepreneur that creates a positive image of himself in the public through his lifestyle, education, and attitude, and is proving himself to be one of the future leaders of the national business scene.” (Davor Huić, Briefing)

“In the beginning of the year, he finished the takeover of Neva and issued a commercial entry. That is how he will continue to follow Pliva in one small portion of business. All this leads to Atlantic’s appearance on the stock exchange. Will this occur?” (Darko Markušić, Vjesnik)

“Tedeschi shows that he thinks in a long-term sense, and that he is prepared to invest in people because that is the only way in which a family business can be successfully led. He is a person that is not afraid to talk about different options in cooperating with different companies. In his managerial philosophy, he accepts that the words capital and value have a completely new meaning- today, this means people and their knowledge.” (Darko Buković, HINA)

“A young entrepreneur who constantly proves his energy, dedication to his work, investment in knowledge, and good planning of company development, its image, and acquisition on the market, in rule gives an exceptional effect.” (Miomir Štrbac, Slobodna Dalmacija)

MARIJAN ĆURKOVIĆ, Croatia Insurance

“No competition. He succeeded from in moving away from the connection to Tuđman, as Croatia Insurance appeared in the period of Suad Rizvanbegović, and created a respectable insurance company in Croatia and a leader in all forms of insurance.” (Ratko Peter, Radio 101)

“Very few companies would go through a failed attempt at privatization without any large problems. During that process, Croatia Insurance completely exhibited its competitiveness to other companies, and maintained its clients and market while expanding in the region. Ćurković proved himself to be a very experienced manager, worked quietly and deserves first place among the listed candidates.” (Ljubica Gatarić, Večernji list)

“He managed to maintain approximately half of the national market, even though the past two years have not been so well. The company was ‘tortured’ with privatization attempts, and the competition had access to business secrets. Ćurković proved himself to be a very successful manager who does not need strategic partners.” (Snježana Mlinarević, Večernji list)

ŽELJKO KERUM, Kerum
“His step forward from stores to production of health foods, national clothing and tourism are clear indicators of a good entrepreneurial spirit and capability. He is aware that the invasion of chain stores is decreasing the market share and profit in that niche, and he has directed his profit from food stores into propulsion sectors.” (Miomir Štrbac, Slobodna Dalmacija)

“The controversial owner from Split has managed to resist the appearance of foreign and national chains. If they give up one day, he will enjoy the profits.” (Snježana Mlinarević, Večernji list)

“As much as Željko Kerum ‘profited’ in the eyes of individuals that published photographs of his expensive Mercedes, it is a fact that the entrepreneur from Split has been building that company for the past fourteen years; he now has 1800 employees. Even though the wages of his employees are not so high, he has created a national chain food store which has been successful in competing against national and foreign stores on the Croatian market. The development of the Kerum company is moving towards tourism, and in 2004 he will be present in industrial production. He purchased Diokom in receivership and saved the jobs of 780 employees and allowed the continuation of production of the sunk giant by creating new clothing brands. Through the purchase of Pliva’s company in Trogir, Kerum has turned towards production of health foods, and if he succeeds, he will purchase Slobodna Dalmacija as a member of the Pojat consortium and his empire will expand to publishing.” (Ljubica Vuko, Slobodna Dalmacija)

ANTE VLAHOVIĆ, Rovinj Tobacco Factory (TDR)
“There is not much to be said about TDR. The shares, after being included in the JDD quotation, have been shown to be maybe the most sought after, and his shareholders and officials have been declared millionaires. Vlahović’s concept of a closed stock society is maybe morally questionable, but functional in practice. It is also a very interesting and inventive model in which TDR divides its tobacco portion, where they plan to copy the Elka example. The dark side of TDR’s annual operation was presented when it was the only unsuccessful venture on the Serbian market, but comfort can be found in the fact that TDR’s attempt in the Serbian tobacco industry was also lost by larger companies- Philip Morris and BAT.” (Darko Markušić, Vjesnik)

“In the leading company which is owned by 700 of its workers and has created more than 7% of the country’s total GNP, Vlahović has successfully sought new methods of development for his excellent projects. He has successfully entered tourism activities, and his plans of creating a large Croatian concern, not only through takeovers but through exchanges of shares in other interested Croatian companies that are weak alone, will soon receive both public and government support.” (Đuro Tomljenović, HTV)

ZDENKO ADROVIĆ, Raiffeisen bank
“He dared to have three women in his Executive board, which is not common in the banking and finance circles because it is believed to be a male oriented business. He is at the top of a bank that has won the Golden Kuna award for the past three years for being the most successful bank in Croatia, as awarded by the Croatian Chamber of Commerce; this year, he is not in the competition.” (Darko Buković, HINA)

GORAN GAZIVODA, HVB
“Even though he is not exposed to the media, he has successfully joined two banks- HVB and Splitska, and moved the headquarters in Split proving that not everything needs to be in Zagreb.” (Ratko Peter, Radio 101)

PETAR RADAKOVIĆ, Erste&Steiermarkische Bank
“Quiet and not too communicative, he is at the head of one of the banks that is fighting for the third place position in Croatia; in a short time he has managed to neutralize all negativity that was connected to Riječka bank, and with the joining of the two banks he will keep the ESB headquarters in Rijeka. The 2004 business year will show how the Rijeka ESP ship will float into Croatia.” (Darko Buković, HINA)

FRANCO PALMA, Riviera holding

“A long term tourism operator, he managed to maintain the largest tourism company in a time of crisis. He began significant investments, and it is especially credible that he maintained the Istrian style in his services.” (Ljubica Gatarić, Večernji list)

ANĐELKO LEKO, Sheraton
“During the privatization of the tourism industry, Croatia attracted few world hotel chains. Leko managed to bring the hotel in Zagreb into one of the protected American chains, Starwood, and adapted their offer to the requests of the world brand. The well known hotel name guarantees quality and safety to tourists and business persons in a city that is only beginning to create a reputation of being a European metropolis.” (Zvjezdana Heina, HTV)

ĐENIO RADIĆ, Plava Laguna
“One of the largest Croatian tourism companies is creating a continuous growth rate in both profit (especially operative) and employment. In 1997, his company already emitted deposit entries, and was the only company in our tourism sector that emitted firstly commercial entries, then bonds (2001) and four times in a row was the winner of the Golden Tourism Share.” (Đuro Tomljenović, HTV)

MAJA PEĆAREVIĆ, Generalturist
“At one time, Generalturist was written off; today it is among the top agencies with the safest reputation.”(Viktor Vresnik, Vjesnik)

DRAGO MUNJIZA, Konzum
“It is difficult to estimate the influence of the relatively young and unknown manager in the business politics of Konzum; during the year he began, the trade activities that separated Konzum from other companies included the political strengthening of the market and the strengthening of the position of the leading national food store chain.” (Ljubica Gatarić, Večernji list)

PAVO ZUBAK, AutoZubak
“He successfully joined all his companies, transformed the management structure, announced the entrance on the stock exchange, pulled out from the supervisory board, and allowed young managers to actively manage the concern. A commendable move by a respected modern businessman.” (Mislav Šimatović, Nacional)

KARLO RADOLOVIĆ, Uljanik
“The question remains- who made more money, Radolović or Vrhovnik?” (Viktor Vresnik, Vjesnik)

ŽELJKO ČOVIĆ, Pliva
“The top man in numerous surveys and elections for manager of the year. This time he is unavoidable because of the results in Pliva. He would be better ranked if we look at total success, and not relative- not taking into account the past year. Our only global company recorded excellent results, registered new medicine, while researched new substances are emerging at their own tempo. That is seen in the loss of a large number of significant employees in the past twelve months, which is suspicion of the quality of the working environment in the company.” (Davor Huić, Briefing)

DARINKO BAGO, Končar
“Successful management of the concern which is made up of 25 companies, who deal with what the Croatian economy does not have- industrial production. This year, Končar created 22% more profit than last year, despite constant spending on reconstruction of the concern, while profit will total seven million kuna. Bago is at the head of a concern that received valuable operations in the redevelopment of Iraq, despite complete American control and the unsatisfactory Croatian attitude towards the intervention of the United States.” Mislav Šimatović, Nacional)

ZVJEZDANA BLAŽIĆ, Kraš
“Because of the liberalization of the trade industry, the Croatian market has been swamped with imported products and it will be difficult to operate with such competition. The Executive President at Kraš is working hard at reconstructing the company, and taking new younger managers in order to become a stronger, more innovative and more competitive company- recognized by key Croatian products and an orientation towards strengthening exports and widening business in the region.” (Zvjezdana Heina, HTV)

BORIS LALIĆ, Zagrebačka pivovara
“Despite the extremely difficult conditions in the beer industry, mainly because of high expenses in Croatia, Zagrebačka pivovara is operating well. Despite international competition, Zagrebačka pivovara has managed to maintain more than half of the market share. Along with the ownership logistics of Belgian Interbrew, Zagrebačka pivovara released several new types of beer into the market. The new products resulted in better business results by 7%.” (Mislav Šimatović, Nacional)

JORN PEDERSEN, Panonska pivovara
“Despite strong competition, high taxes on beer, and the decrease in beer sales on the national market, in only six months Pedersen managed to increase the shares of Paninska pivovara from 9 to 11%. They record, also, excellent export results. They are ecologically aware and point out that Panonska pivovara is the only company in Croatia that has a system for cleaning ballast waters. The returned bottles can be used up to thirty times instead of ending up in the garbage dump.” (Ljubica Vuko, Slobodna Dalmacija)

STANKO KOVAČ, Croatian Road works
“Even though the representative is an older manager, he has shown top efficiency and skills in organizing all business, financial, and technological departments in a complex project such as highway construction. The result is the kilometers of highway towards Split without any delay in the given deadlines.” (Miomir Štrbac)

LJERKA CERC, Inker
“She brought Inker back from the dead, and cannot create tiles as fast as the market requires.” (Ratko Peter, Radio 101)

DANIEL ŽDERIĆ, Profil

“I am not sure that this is what I enjoy most in publishing, but finally someone in Croatia is aggressively forcing people to read- without too much mystification, without ‘exalted access’ to literature, without shame of mixing culture and business. Among other things, why wouldn’t writers in Croatia be stars?” (Viktor Vresnik, Vjesnik)

JUROSLAV BULJUBAŠIĆ, SEM

“The government must realize that we are its entrepreneurial partner and not enemy, which is often said by Juroslav Buljubašić. His opinion is shared by many small and medium sized entrepreneurs, but not all managers in the Croatian Employers Association in which Buljubašić is the Vice President of the Executive Council. He proved that he is doing well as an entrepreneur in Split through the recent development of shipbuilding, and after Mudrinić and Marinac, he is awaiting a key position at HUP in which he should be better recognized by the Croatian public.” (Ljubica Vuko, Slobodna Dalmacija)

NINA OBERITER-GLUHAK, PBZ American Express
“The credit card company, in world proportions, is recording large growth rates, and PBZ American Express is successfully keeping up with world trends and is offering more services to the Croatian market.” (Ljubica Gatarić, Večernji list)

THE REMAINING CANDIDATES FOR THE MANAGER OF THE YEAR AWARD:

DARKO ŽIVKOVIĆ, Euroline
With the complete strategic support by the owner Brace Radovanović and despite media blackmail, the representative of Mercedes, Chrysler and Smart is stronger each year.

FRANJO TOMIĆ, BMW
Experience and an excellent product ensures that the Croatian-German entrepreneur will have a constant level of success.

LARS AKE EINAR ENELL, Ericsson

MIRKO BARIŠIĆ, Siemens

DRAGUTIN DRK, Vindija
The milk in the new plastic bottles became a large hit among consumers. A large return to the young population.

DARKO MARINAC, Podravka
Last year’s winner had large problems, both in Croatia and in foreign countries. He began a large reconstruction of the company which is going to be sold.

DUBRAVKO ARTUKOVIĆ, Franck
He inherited the company from his father and made it more modern.

MISLAV GALIĆ, Ledo

An absolute ruler of the market with no oscillation.

IVICA SERTIĆ, Jamnica
A successful presentation of the new, modern packaging. The company is in tune with world trends.

DRAGUTIN BIONDIĆ, Heruc

IGOR OPENHAIM, INGRA
Quietly, he positioned Ingra among the strongest Croatian companies.

IVAN ČERMAK, Tifon
He managed to arise from the dead and return to the top; he completed the gas stations on the highway from Zagreb to Zadar and opened new ones in Zagreb. A large investment turned into large profits.

MARIJAN DREMPETIĆ, HŽ
During difficult conditions, he managed to modernize HŽ. He ordered new wagons, and reconstructed the tracks to Split.

IVICA MUDRINIĆ, HT
After he brought HT to a leading position, Mudrinić is leaving to go to a high position in Deutsche Telecom.

JOSEF VINATZER, VIPnet
Along with HT, he managed to maintain the duopoly in the GSM market. Good marketing, large profits, and complete support from Nemšić in Vienna.

ŽARKO KRALJEVIĆ, Diners
A strong position separates Generalturist and Budget from Diners. He dedicated the company to credit card operations. An absolute leader in the region.

VLADIMIR SMOLEC, Digitel
Still a market leader with large clients- HT, Zaba and TDR.

IVICA VIDOVIĆ, McCann&Erickson
A good move was the business cooperation with Digitel and the creation of the mutual company Magna.

SLAVEN FISCHER, BBDO
At the marketing festival in Opatija, he won the most valuable awards. A stabile and serious agency.
